PRESS RELEASE – Nick Rowe closes in on Formula 4 Championship

 

AGI Sport used every bit of their home ground advantage to propel driver Nick Rowe to second place in the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship.

The young West Australian had one of the best race weekends of his career with a pole position, a lap record and finishing every race on the podium to take the round win and shave dozens of points off the gap to the championship leader.

“We got the round win. AGI Sport did a great job all weekend and we can’t thank them enough and SCT Logistics for all their awesome support to get me on the grid and all the boys have done an awesome job all weekend,’ Nick said.

Nick started on pole for races one and three and was just pipped at the post in the final race by Luis Leeds in a nail biting finish.

“We had a great set-up really, the car couldn’t have been any better, we were pulling away then the safety car came out and we got a good restart and then just made a mistake into turn two and lost the race lead.’

“Just couldn’t get close enough to get back in the tow and got back into there in the last lap. One more lap and I would have had a chance but that’s history I guess.” Nick smiled.

Rowe certainly had his work cut out for him with the return of Red Bull driver Luis Leeds and Harry Hayek returning from the British F4 Championship keeping this year’s championship leaders Will Brown and Jordan Love well at bay.

“Having Harry and Luis back from the UK has really made me push to another limit because I really want to beat them because they have been over there racing against the best,” said Nick.

Fellow AGI Sport/SCT Logistics driver Jack Smith wasn’t quite as upbeat after a spin put his Race 3 hopes to bed.

“Not the best of weekends. We sort of started off Race 1 pretty positively but Race 2 and 3 sort of haven’t gone to plan, made a few silly mistakes but hasn’t really gone too well,” said the young Queenslander.

“I’ve learnt a few things. I’ve got to keep my head cool in a lot of races and not get too over the top. That’s probably the thing I’ve taken away from this weekend,” continued Jack.

Smith certainly got plenty of track time, sharing stints between the open wheeler Formula 4 category and a steer for the Marc team in the Australian GT Trophy series where he clocked a second place. He wasn’t so lucky in his Formula 4 races however.

“Race 2 was a bit of an average race for us. We made a silly mistake on the opening lap and I lost all my positions. We got lucky in the end when a few people went off and we ended up finishing eighth so it wasn’t too bad considering the spin at the start,” said Jack.

The young driver maintained a positive attitude though and identified areas he feels he can work on before the next round.

“I definitely need to work on my starts, I got a lot of wheel spin and lost a few positions so it’s definitely something to work on in the future.”

“I definitely need to heat up my tyres a lot more on the parade lap. We had no temp at all in the first lap and the car was super loose and really hard to drive so I’ll be working on that.

Both drivers have just two weeks to wait until they next hit the track with Round 4 of the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship taking place at Queensland Raceway July 22- 24.
